What is ODD, Types of ODD and his Storage

 ODD (Optical Disk Drive)

It is an advanced technology for data storage. Optical Disk is a disk read and written by laser beam. Optical disk does not need to move access arms and read/write heads, because a laser beam can be moved electronically. For writing data, a laser beam burns tiny cavities into the surface of a disk to mark bits for data. To read the data, a laser beam scans these areas.

There are three types of ODD.

CD storage-        700MB (150MB, 250MB, 350MB, 680MB, 700MB)

DVD storage-      4.7GB (4.7GB, 8.5GB, 9.4GB, 17GB)

 BD storage-       50GB (25GB, 50GB, 100GB)

ROM-   In this type of drive we can read data only.

R-          In this type of drive we can read and write data on blank drive.

RW-      In this type of drive we can read, write and rewrite data.

Types of Connections

Hard Drive

 Hard Drive

Drive is the main location where all data is stored. Most Hard Disk drives consist of spinning platters of aluminium, glass or ceramic that is coated with a magnetic media. Harddisk is used to store huge amount of data permanently.

                Hard Drive available in the market to store the data like 80GB, 160GB, 250GB, 320GB, 500GB, 1TB, 2TB, 4TB, 8TB, etc.

Memory, RAM, ROM, Cache Memory, Virtual Memory

 Memory

It is an internal storage area in the Computer System. The term Memory is used for physical memory, which refers to the actual chips capable to holding data. There is also a virtual memory, which expands physical memory onto a hard disk.

Types of Primary Memory
 1. Volatile Memory- Volatile is a type of memory which stores data till power is on.
Ex.- RAM, VRAM, Cache memory.

Non- Volatile Memory- Non-Volatile memory is the type of memory which stores data permanently. It stores data until we don't delete or erase.
Ex.- ROM and Flash memory.

Types of RAM

1. SRAM (Static Random Access Memory)
2. DRAM (Dynamic Random Access Memory)

Required 6 transistor to make one cell of memory

Required 1 transistor and 1 capacitor to make a cell

Ex- Computer main memory, Graphic memory

Types of ROM

1. PROM (Programmable)- Manufacturer  writes data in this type of memory. No one can erase or modify data. Only can be read.

2. EPROM (Erasable)- If data is written in EPROM, it can be erased by ultraviolet rays using ROM Burner. We can Rewrite after erasing.

3. EEPROM (Electrically Erasable)- It can be erased using electric current. We can erase and re-write data without any other tools.

Cache Memory

Cache memory is the fastest memory. It is the type of SRAM. It is available on Processor and Hard Disk. It helps to process faster data. It stores executed instructions and their result.
Types of Cache Memory
  • L1- 256kb
  • L2- 1mb
  • L3- 6mb
Virtual Memory
Virtual memory is not a storage unit, it's a technique. Virtual memory increase the capacity of main memory. In Virtual memory, even such programs which have a larger size then the main memory are allowed to be executed.

What is BIOS, BIOS Functions, Benefits of BIOS Configuring, Most popular BIOS and Settings in video.

 BIOS

It is an essential set of programs (routines) stored on a chip on the motherboard of a Computer.
It acts as an intermediary between computer hardware and its operating system. Without BIOS, the PC's operating system cannot communicate with, or take control of, the hardware.

Functions of BIOS

1. Power On Self Test (POST)- It do check that all necessary computer parts and functioning properly, such as memory or keyboard.

2. Bootstrap Loader- It helps in loading the operating system.

3. Setup Utility Program- During installation  of a system, the user runs BIOS setup program and enters the correct  parameters.
The settings of memory, disk types and other other settings are stored in NVRAM.

4. BIOS Drivers- BIOS drivers are collection of programs stored in one or more EEPROM or EPROM (memory) chips, depending on the computer design, on the motherboard.

Benefits of Configuring BIOS for Laptop/Desktop

  1. Enforcing Security
  2. Hardware Monitoring
  3. Operating System Booting
  4. Hardware Testing
  5. Hardware Troubleshooting

What is Firmware, Upgrade a Firmware, why should be upgrade firmware, two types of upgrade firmware

 Firmware

BIOS(Basic input output system) of a computer is a Firmware that ensures all the hardware devices attached to the computer are working perfectly.
It works operations such as initializing the device, checking whether all the peripheral devices such as printer, scanner etc. and other component  are working fine.

Why should we upgrade Firmware?
  • For the motherboard to support a new processor or other hardware.
  • Fix bugs and improve stability or performance of your system.
  • To change the operating system or if the current BIOS version does not support the new configuration.
Caution: Installation of incorrect firmware update or interruption during the update process may permanently damage the motherboard making the system unbootable.

Upgrade a Firmware

Before beginning the process of Firmware Upgrade
  • Note the product number of your computer
  • Check the Internet connection
  • Keep a blank USB drive

There are types of Firmware Upgrade
1. Using Windows Executable File
2. Using Bootable USB Stick

Using Windows Executable File
  • Finding the current BIOS version (use run command msinfo32)
  • Finding the Processor type (use run command msinfo32)
  • Finding and downloading BIOS update (use system manufacturer website)
  • Installing the BIOS update

Using Bootable USB Stick
  • Finding and Downloading BIOS update
  • Finding the System Board ID in BIOS (From System Diagnostics)
  • Opening the Hardware Diagnostics UEFI menu
  • Updating the BIOS
